What is EF Coaching (A guide to help Students)
A Guide to Help Students Understand Executive Function Coaching
When parents begin exploring executive function coaching, students may not always understand why support is being suggested or may see coaching as just one more adult telling them what they need to do.
This guide was created for teens and college students themselves. It explains executive function through situations they may actually recognize, including procrastination, constant reminders, difficulty following through, losing track of time, wanting more independence, and sometimes not seeing the same concerns the adults around them see.
Rather than telling students what they need to “fix,” the guide helps them understand what coaching actually looks like, how a coach can support them, and what they can gain from the process.
Parents can use this as a starting point for a conversation about coaching that encourages more student buy in, ownership, and voice from the beginning.
